Complex Resistivity (CR) of Wood and Standing Trees
نویسنده
چکیده
Complex resistivity (CR) has been used to investigate the properties and the extent of damage in wood and standing trees. Our laboratory experiments have proved that wood’s anisotropy influences its electrical behaviour. It is a well-established fact that wood exhibits the lowest resistivity amplitudes in the axial direction compared to that in tangential and radial directions. It has been shown that anisotropy affects not only the amplitude but also the phase. Phase values are the highest in the axial direction, particularly in the lower frequency range. The changes in resistivity due to fungi-induced damage were investigated in a long-term laboratory test. With progressing damage, both resistivity and phase decrease. The phase also shows sensitivity to the changes in the structure of wood cell. CR Tomography (CRT) has been employed in the field to detect fungi-infected zones in fallen trees. A number of factors such as the type and age of the tree, and the season seem to influence the CRT results. Among those, the effect of seasonal changes has been demonstrated here. Furthermore CRT can be used to characterise fungi-infected zones in the tree.

Allometric equations for determining volume and biomass of Acer monspessulanum L. subsp. cinerascens multi-stemmed trees
Due to the importance of Acer monspessulanum in Iranian mountain forests, a study was carried out to reliably estimate its woody biomass and growing volume via allometric equations. Four transects, five trees in each were chosen randomly. The characteristics of standing trees including: diameter at root collar, height, number of stems and crown width were measured, then trees were finally cut d...

Awareness of quality and quantity of wood produced in forestry plans play an important role in management of this product in market. The objective of this study that has been carried out in 7th watershed of north forest of Iran was to determine effective factors on wood breakage in felled trees, compare wood losses during felling and identify wood losses in felled trees and methods of their pre...
متن کاملNondestructive detection of decay in living trees.
We used a four-point resistivity method to detect wood decay in living trees. A low-frequency alternating current was applied to the stem and the induced voltage measured between two points along the stem. The effective resistivity of the stem was estimated based on stem cross-sectional area. A comparison within a group of trees showed that trees with butt rot had an effective resistivity that ...
متن کاملRegional Distribution and Dynamics of Coarse Woody Debris in Midwestern Old-Growth Forests
Old-growth forests have been noted for containing significant quantities of deadwood. However, there has been no coordinated effort to quantify the deadwood component of old-growth remnants across large regions of temperate deciduous forest. We present results of a regional inventorythatquantifies and examines regional and temporal trends fordeadwood in upland old-growth forest remnants within ...
متن کاملReduced wood stiffness and strength, and altered stem form, in young antisense 4CL transgenic poplars with reduced lignin contents.
• Reduced lignin content in perennial crops has been sought as a means to improve biomass processability for paper and biofuels production, but it is unclear how this could affect wood properties and tree form. • Here, we studied a nontransgenic control and 14 transgenic events containing an antisense 4-coumarate:coenzyme A ligase (4CL) to discern the consequences of lignin reduction in poplar ...
